Find mode was once nearly indistinguishable from Browse mode (where regular data entry is performed). FileMaker Pro 10 eliminates this potential confusion. Enter Find mode now and each field has a magnifying glass so there's no mistaking your mode (figure 1). If you decide you don't want to see the magnifying glasses, the behavior can be turned off by deselcting "show field frames when record is active" in the layout setup dialog box.
Figure 1: Know your modes -- There's never a doubt when you're in Find mode now. Just look for the magnifying glass.
Figure 2: Never loose another find -- Now you can save and reuse them without writing a script.
Figure 3: Hello, Operator? -- Operators are special characters you can use to perform complex searches.
Having performed your carefully constructed find, you no longer have to create a script to save it. FileMaker remembers your last several finds and lets you save them (figure 2). From the Records menu, choose Saved Finds to access your recent and saved finds. Under Edit Saved Finds, you can modify any existing saved find. Handy if, say, your saved find searches for the current year and January first rolls around.
Reworked find operators are one other nice refinement about Find mode. Formerly called Symbols, operators are special characters you can use to perform complex searches. For more on what they do, visit
http://My.Advisor.com/doc/18090 where they're covered in a previous edition of this column. FileMaker 10 presents the operators up in the toolbar, logically grouped with better descriptions of what each operator does (figure 3).
