Visual Basic has a long legacy predicated on developer productivity within a rapid development environment, but prior to VB.NET, the language lacked true object-oriented programming features and buried access to low-level operating system functions. This also meant living with some performance penalties. The release of VB.NET put power into the hands of Visual Basic developers everywhere, while keeping them comfortable with familiar syntax and a rapid development IDE.
