Face GroupWise Challenges Head-On

GroupWise Advisor gives you the information you need to avoid administration anxiety.

By Susana Peinado, Managing Editor, GroupWise Advisor

What's driving you nuts these days? The never-ending battle to keep spam and viruses out of your network? How about the challenge of synchronizing e-mail to all the cool, new mobile devices your users are bringing into your organization? Or, perhaps you're most concerned with wringing every bit of value you can out of your GroupWise implementation? All three, you say? You aren't alone.

This issue of GroupWise Advisor focuses on security, mobility, total cost of ownership, and helping you take advantage of GroupWise 6.5.

Challenges you face

Spam is a growing challenge that eats up valuable bandwidth, storage space, and other network resources. In 2003, the cost of spam to U.S. corporations will exceed $10 billion, estimates Ferris Research.

Among its new features, GroupWise 6.5 includes increased spam-fighting capabilities. You can add blacklists, and GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) will check incoming message sources against those lists. Users can also use junk lists, block lists, and trust lists to manage their incoming e-mail. Contributing Editor Frank Gioffre's article on page 18 in this issue gives you a tour of the hottest new features of GroupWise 6.5. And Charles Nguyen-Huu's article on page 36, leads you to the anti-spam solution that's right for you.

Another important issue for corporations, also addressed by GroupWise 6.5, is mobile access. The number of mobile workers in the U.S. will rise by 12.7 million between 2001 and 2006, from 92 million to 105 million, according to IDC. In other words, within three years, about two-thirds (66 percent) of U.S. employees will require some sort of regular mobile access to corporate data. GroupWise users want to have access to their e-mail, calendars, and task lists from any location at any time.

GroupWise 6.5 offers better integration with mobile devices. Christina Dowling's article on page 42 takes you through eight steps to help you plan a GroupWise mobile solution. Contributing Editor

Eric Raff's article on page 31 shows you how to set up GroupWise so users can get access to their mailboxes from anywhere.

Minimizing TCO is a priority. Technical Editor Tay Kratzer shows you how to increase productivity and make your network and server usage more efficient in his article on page 12.

What's to come

Upcoming issues will discuss GroupWise security, using other Novell products with GroupWise, and tips and techniques for making GroupWise administration easier.
