IBM Changes Lotus Product Names

Look for Lotus brand product names to become more descriptive and logical in 2003. The core Notes and Domino names will remain.

IBM Lotus Software will adopt new names for several products in 2003. It's part of a plan to make easier for customers to find and choose Lotus products, the company says.

The new naming format will consist of IBM (the master brand) + Lotus (the software brand) + a new, more descriptive name. The shift will bring the Lotus products in line with naming conventions for IBM's other brands, such as "IBM WebSphere ..." or "IBM DB2 ..."

IBM emphasizes that it isn't changing the products themselves, just the way it markets them.

Citing strong brand recognition, it will leave the core Notes and Domino names untouched, although iNotes Web Access 6 and Domino Everyplace might change. Several other products will also stay the same, because they already meet the new criteria.

What names will change? Among the Web conferencing, IM, and team collaboration products, look for these changes:

  • IBM Lotus QuickPlace becomes IBM Lotus Team Workplace.
  • IBM Lotus Sametime (IM/Awareness) becomes IBM Lotus Instant Messaging.
  • IBM Lotus Sametime (e-meetings) becomes IBM Lotus Web Conferencing.

New names for e-learning products will include:
  • IBM Lotus LearningSpace - Virtual Classroom becomes IBM Lotus Virtual Classroom.
  • IBM Lotus LearningSpace Learning Management System becomes IBM Lotus Learning Management System.

Most products in the knowledge discovery category will remain the same, including IBM Lotus Discovery Server, IBM Lotus Workflow, and IBM Lotus Extended Search. The new name for Domino.Doc has not been announced.

IBM will start applying the new names in the next major release of each product. The company defines a major release as a point release or greater (Notes 5.1 to 5.2, for example), not a maintenance release.

During the transition period, look for both names to appear in IBM marketing materials, in this format: IBM Lotus Team Workplace (QuickPlace).
