Verizon and Microsoft Team Up

The wireless carrier has teamed with Microsoft to offer services such as MSN instant messaging and Hotmail from a digital Web-enabled phone.

Verizon Wireless has teamed with Microsoft to offer a new wireless data service for consumers and companies that combines Verizon Internet communication services with content services from MSN. The two companies will work together to develop technology and products across a range of devices.

The new joint service will be available to Verizon Wireless customers who have a Web-enabled Verizon Wireless digital phone. From that phone, they can access communication services such as MSN Messenger Service instant messaging, Hotmail Web-based e-mail, and Microsoft .NET alerts.

The co-branded service will be the default service for new digital subscribers to the Verizon wireless Web service.

Verizon claims 30 million customers for its wireless voice and data services, and Microsoft says its MSN portal attracts 270 million unique users worldwide per month.

Looking ahead

The companies plan to co-develop new applications in the future, including access to location-based services, Microsoft says.

Verizon will offer customers wireless devices that run on Microsoft software and wireless technology, such as Pocket PCs and smart phones. Future services will run on the Microsoft .NET Enterprise Server family to offer enterprise users access to mobile business productivity applications such as mobile messaging. In addition, users will also be able to use the Outlook messaging and collaboration client on the road.
