Top Reasons to Become a Tech Consultant

IT consultants cite variety, leading-edge technologies, compensation, and flexibility.

A survey by RHI Consulting shows a variety of reasons to choose a career as a technology consultant. When asked what the greatest benefit of being an IT consultant was, 25 percent said the chance to work for a variety of companies; 24 percent stated experience with leading-edge technologies; 22 percent cited attractive compensation; and 17 percent said a flexible schedule.

Sixty-two percent of respondents said they believe they are better compensated than they would be working full time in the IT field. Office politics (29 percent), lack of variety (29 percent), and rigid schedule (11 percent) were listed as the reasons a full time position was not as appealing as steady contract assignments.

One third of consultants surveyed listed having control over career destiny and work done as the most rewarding aspect of a career in consulting. Also included were being appreciated for expertise (28 percent), and helping others expand skills by sharing knowledge (16 percent).

Fifty-seven percent said they intended to remain a consultant for several years or more.
