About this Article:
Global companies face the challenge of continual and explosive growth of information communicated across borders, including e-mail messages, instant messages (IM), and collaborative web sessions. This information travels with sensitive documents attached across various borders. According to the Radicati Group, the number of active e-mail boxes will increase from 1.4 Billion in 2006 to 2.5 Billion in 2010. The number of global IM accounts will increase from 994 million to 1.4 Billion in the same time frame. Wireless e-mail will also explode from 14 million users today to 228 Million in 2010. This growth implies that companies will have to examine what information is traveling where and ensure they meet their regulatory compliance obligations in the process. This is a challenging problem to solve as you examine the differences in privacy and securities laws across borders.
