IBM is expanding Linux support across the Lotus software portfolio, including a fully supported Linux messaging client. Lotus Domino Web Access -- Lotus' Web client -- expands IBM's Linux offering to include personal productivity and collaboration technology. There's also new Lotus Domino support for Linux on IBM eServer zSeries.
IBM says it's accommodating demand for Linux-based collaborative software, as well as addressing the needs of those who want Linux software at the server and client levels. Expanding Linux support for client-side and server software can provide Lotus customers additional flexibility when designing collaborative solutions, as well as help lower overall total cost of ownership, the company says.
Lotus Domino Web Access (formerly iNotes Web Access) will be the first Linux-based client to integrate instant messaging (IM) technology. The first IM technology to integrate with Domino Web Access will be Lotus Instant Messaging (formerly Sametime), and other products may be added to future releases, according to Tim Kounadis, senior marketing manager, IBM Lotus Software. With this release, users will be able to access the collaboration software from Linux- or Windows-based desktops, and can have a cost-effective Web client running on Linux via a Mozilla browser. With Lotus Domino Web Access, users can access Lotus Domino functionality -- including e-mail, calendaring and scheduling, replication, and business applications -- anywhere they have an Internet connection.
IBM also announced Lotus Domino for Linux on eServer zSeries, which expands the availability of Lotus Domino for Linux to the mainframe. Lotus Domino for Linux on zSeries gives enterprise customers the ability to combine Lotus Domino for Linux with a highly scalable and reliable IBM mainframe, the company says.

Pricing and availability
IBM plans to offer Lotus Domino Web Access and Lotus Domino for Linux on zSeries as part of Lotus Notes and Domino 6.5, scheduled for release during the third quarter of 2003. The company will announce pricing, additional platform support, and availability at that time.
