Intel Centrino Technology for Laptop Mobile Computing

Intel's Centrino mobile-specific processor and related components promise longer battery life and smaller designs for laptop computers.

Intel has released new technology for mobile laptop computing. Intel Centrino for wireless laptop PCs is a package that includes the Pentium M mobile processor, related chipsets, and a number of 802.11 wireless network components, including the Intel PRO/Wireless network connection.

Until now, processor design hasn't differed much between desktop machines and mobile laptop computers -- both were designed with an AC power source in mind, not batteries. Centrino, on the other hand, targets mobile-specific needs, including extended battery life and thinner and lighter laptop designs.

Some laptop manufacturers are adopting the Pentium M processor but not the entire Centrino package, which means they can't use the Centrino brand name in their marketing efforts. One reason is that the wireless network component of Centrino is not considered to be state-of-the art, and some reports are that radio performance is not especially good.

Intel plans to certify wireless hotspots in hotels, coffee shops, airports, etc. with a Centrino compatibility logo. Again, vendors will have to implement the entire Centrino package to use the logo. Those who use the Centrino processor with components from other companies can't participate.

Intel is the largest manufacturer of semiconductors in the world.
