IBM Improves ODBC/SQL Access to Domino Data

The NotesSQL driver lets relational database management systems such as Oracle or DB2 issue SQL statements to Domino. Version 3.02 offers better performance in server applications.

IBM has updated the NotesSQL driver. The driver makes Domino databases, which aren't relational, look like a relational data source to an ODBC-enabled tool. Relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as Oracle or DB2 can issue SQL statements to Domino.

NotesSQL is an ODBC driver for Notes and Domino that lets ODBC-enabled data reporting tools, database tools, and application development tools read, report, and update information stored in Domino .NSF files. Users and application developers can use the driver to integrate Domino data with their applications using tools such as Crystal Decisions Crystal Reports, Microsoft Visual Basic, Access, Brio, and Lotus Approach.

The driver lets Internet application development tools that support ODBC access Domino data. Developers can also enable existing ODBC-capable applications to access data stored in a Domino database.

NotesSQL 3.02 includes improvements for maintaining connections for multiple users while respecting the access rights of each, IBM says. The updated version also offers better performance in server applications. It's been certified to operate with Domino 6 databases.

To use the driver, you need one of the following, with a full user license (minimum requirements):

  • Lotus Notes Client release 4.6.4
  • Lotus Domino release 4.6.4
  • Lotus Notes Designer release 4.6.4
  • Lotus Domino Off-Line Services release 1.01
