Enterprise Media Beans

The Enterprise Media Beans (EMB) framework lets you integrate rich media such as video and audio into EJB-based business applications.

Enterprise Media Beans (EMB) provides a rich-media framework that lets you integrate audio, video, and image data into applications based on Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) Entity Beans within the J2EE application development model. Within the framework, rich media is treated as just another type of data you can embed into business logic -- and not have to worry about client type, server media protocols, media format, or streaming technology.

The EMB framework is based on the Java Community Process (JCP) JSR086 standard proposal for J2EE-compliant applications (http://jcp.org/jsr/detail/086.jsp). (You can read the Public Review Draft Specification at http://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/review/jsr086/index.html.)

The component-based application model lets you manage and integrate rich media data into EJB-based business applications. Entirely Java-based, it uses current products and technologies for storing, modifying, and rendering media.

EMBs are based on the EJB 1.1 standard (also used in WebSphere 4.0), and include the following components:

  • Media Entity Beans for abstracting and managing media data
  • Media Format Beans for supporting various audio and video formats
  • Media Distribution Beans for supporting streaming servers
  • Samples of programming and system administration
